Post-traumatic stress disorder may occur after a person is exposed to a traumatic event, a natural disaster, physical assault or unwanted sexual contact. PTSD can cause fatigue, insomnia and even flashbacks of the trauma. Some sufferers also have trouble remembering or concentrating for any period of time.

This is the first major study of PTSD and onset of cardiovascular disease. To come up with the data, the researchers examined about 50,000 participants in the Nurses’ Health Study II over 20 years. What they found was that rates of cardiovascular disease was 60 percent higher in women who reported four or more PTSD symptoms as compared to women who did not have PTSD.

Interestingly, women who had no reported PTSD symptoms but who reported having suffered traumatic events had 45 percent higher rates of cardiovascular disease than women who did not suffer any trauma. The study also showed that as much as half of the increased risk was related to unhealthy behaviors such as obesity, smoking and lack of exercise, as well as medical factors like high blood pressure.

PTSD has generally been considered solely a psychological problem; however, these findings seem to indicate it has a serious impact on physical health. This is also further evidence that PTSD sufferers have an increased risk of chronic disease. The researchers and Master Healer Dr. Pankaj Naram agree: the world’s medical system should stop treating the mind and the body as being separate where health is concerned.
